Why aren't typical parenting strategies working for my child's big feelings and meltdowns?

When traditional approaches to discipline fail (like time-outs, behaviour charts, or consequences involving losing privileges), it is often because those strategies focus on the visible symptom rather than the underlying stress response or challenge. A neuro-informed therapy approach helps parents make sense of a child's behaviour through a developmental lens while keeping solutions practical for modern families. Supporting both you and your child involves learning how to strengthen executive functioning, promote nervous system regulation, and build usable tools that fit the unique reality of your family.

What can a therapist do for parental burnout when I feel overwhelmed by the mental load of all the things? Parenting, working, trying to find time for myself…

Therapy for parental burnout focuses on you, the "person behind the parent." Rather than giving you generic parenting advice, we will explore and address the exhaustion, systemic guilt, and mental load you are experiencing. Each person’s situation is unique so there is no cookie cutter or one size fits all solution. In my Etobicoke practice, I use a grounded, practical framework to build sustainable boundary-setting tools, reduce chronic stress, and help you explore a path forward that seeks to balance your needs and wants.

Do you provide a diagnosis or do assessments?

No, as a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), I do not perform formal diagnostic assessments or communicate medical, psychiatric, or psychological diagnoses (such as for ADHD, Autism, or Learning Disabilities).

However, I support families at every stage of the journey, with or without a diagnosis:

  • No formal diagnosis: You do not need a label or a formal diagnosis to access support. We will focus directly on understanding your child’s behaviour by addressing emotional dysregulation, supporting their nervous system and executive functioning, and developing practical strategies that work for your family’s everyday life.

  • Seeking a diagnosis: If you suspect a diagnosis or need a formal evaluation for school accommodations or medical care, I help you make sense of what you're observing at home and guide you through local referral pathways (such as medical or psychological assessments).

  • With an existing diagnosis: We will focus on developing support aligned with evidence-based approaches and clinical recommendations, translating those into usable daily tools for nervous system regulation, executive functioning, and family communication.

How long does therapy take?

This depends on the person, the situation, and your goals. Some individuals and families find that a short-term, "tools-focused" approach (8–12 sessions) meets their needs, while others prefer ongoing care, similar to a personal trainer for your mental health. We will regularly review your progress and goals together to ensure the work and the pace feel sustainable for you.

Logistics, Insurance and Practice Details

What is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)?

A Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) is a practitioner (therapist) who has completed their graduate-level training and is actively fulfilling their post-graduate clinical practice requirements. In this role, I am a fully registered member in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO #20546). As a mandatory part of this professional designation, I practice under the clinical supervision of a seasoned, fully registered RP to ensure I am providing the highest standard of evidence-based and ethical care.

What is a Clinically Supervised Practice?

In Ontario, all Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying) work under the guidance of a clinical supervisor. This is a senior therapist with extensive experience (at least 5 years and 1,000+ hours of practice) who provides oversight, mentorship, and ethical guidance.

My practice and clinical work is supervised by Shaelyn Kraemer, MACP, DCP, RP: CRPO#008410

Are your services covered by insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans cover services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). I recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm that "Registered Psychotherapy" is included in your specific policy. I provide detailed receipts with my CRPO # for you to submit for reimbursement.

How do you protect my privacy?

I use secure, PHIPA-compliant electronic service providers to manage your health records (Jane App), protect our email communications (Hushmail), and secure our telecommunications (TELUS Business Connect).

What is the Jane App and why do I need to book using it?

Jane is a secure, all-in-one practice management platform used by healthcare professionals across Canada. I use Jane to manage my online booking, clinical charting, and secure billing. When you book a session, you will create a confidential profile within Jane.

This "Client Portal" allows you to:

  • Book or reschedule appointments

  • Complete intake forms and sign confidentiality agreements digitally.

  • Access secure video sessions for virtual appointments.

  • Download receipts for insurance reimbursement.

Do you offer a sliding scale or pro-bono sessions?

Currently, I do not offer a sliding scale or pro-bono spots. To ensure the long-term sustainability of the practice and to maintain a high standard of care for all clients, I operate on a standard fee-for-service basis. If my current rates are a barrier for your family, I am happy to provide a list of community resources or low-cost counseling agencies that may be a better fit for your current budget.
